The cost of clinical trials is rising exponentially. The Tufts Centre for the Study of Drug Development has published data that indicates the average cost to develop and secure marketing approval for a new drug now exceeds $2.5 billion.

Although the new industry model of outsourcing, in the form of Contract research Organisations, is seen as a step in the right direction, the cost of recruiting and retaining patients is still a major challenge.
